The concept of Maverick Helicopters began in December 1995 when husband and wife team Greg and Brenda Rochna decided to step out and do something different. They began building the idea of the company around Greg’s nickname of Maverick, earned from his headstrong nature in voicing his opinions and going the extra step to create a better service environment. The Rochnas envisioned a helicopter tour outfit based on luxury and providing an unparalleled helicopter experience. Thus, in August 1996, Maverick Helicopters was officially launched in Las Vegas, the entertainment capital of the world.
Onward and Upwards
Maverick Helicopters began with a single aircraft and the Rochna duo taking care of everything, including piloting, briefing, maintenance, booking and cleaning. But with a solid business model focusing on impeccable service and style, it’s easy to understand why Maverick Helicopters quickly flourished in a city that might have otherwise been considered over saturated with flight operations.
In September 1999, Maverick Helicopters began specializing in VIP transfers, starting with specialized airport transports to Las Vegas Motor Speedway during NASCAR weekend. The increase in flights led to natural additions to the fleet, including the first Airbus ECO-Star helicopter in 2003.
In 2005, Maverick Helicopters was awarded the globally recognized Helicopter Association International Operator Safety Award. This prestigious award commemorates helicopter pilots and operators who have reached a minimum of 5,000 consecutive hours of accident- and violation-free flight hours.
Of course, that was only the beginning of Maverick’s industry awards and accolades. In 2008, Maverick became the only company in the world to be named twice in Travel Channel’s list “Top 10 Best Helicopter Thrills in the World.” By 2016, the group had earned its seventh consecutive Concierge Choice Award for “Best Air Tour” and the Federal Aviation Administration’s prestigious Diamond Award for its ongoing dedication to superior maintenance training and aircraft safety.
With a growing fleet and list of accolades, it should come as no surprise the next focus for Maverick was expansion. This began with the 2008 launch of Maverick Airlines and its focus on providing scenic airplane tours over the Grand Canyon. Then in 2012, Maverick Aviation Group announced the opening of an impressive 37,000-square-foot terminal, located just outside of the Henderson Executive Airport.
But arguably the largest expansion is the new division of Maverick Helicopters at the Maui, Hawaii, helipad terminal. The group now operates award-winning tours in and out of the Grand Canyon and Las Vegas in addition to one-of-a-kind tours of Haleakala Crater and Maui’s other stunning landscapes.
