How to Pack for Your Hawaiian Holiday

Hana Highway

When you plan a trip to Hawaii, it’s easy to assume you don’t need to pack much. But there are some things you’ll want to bring along to make sure your Hawaiian holiday is the best it can be. Here’s a holiday packing list you can follow to make sure you have everything you need.

Pack Appropriate Items for Your Activities

There are many exciting things to do in Hawaii and you’ll want to pack any special items required for the activities you’re planning on doing. For example, if you’re going on a helicopter tour there are certain items you won’t want to bring like (large backpacks) and other items (such as water and a camera) that you’ll definitely want to have with you to make the most of your adventure.

Consider these items for the rest of your Hawaiian holiday:

No matter what time of year you go to Hawaii you can expect there to be plenty of sunshine. A proper pair of sunglasses with a UV protection rating will make all the difference. Look for sunglasses that protect you from 99 to 100 percent of both UVA and UVB light.

Comfortable Shoes

In Hawaii, it’s not unusual to see the locals wearing slippers or flip-flops everywhere. But, if you’re going hiking, or will be doing a lot of walking, you’ll want to have a comfortable pair of athletic shoes.

Appropriate Clothing

The Aloha state is known for shorts and t-shirts because the weather is so picturesque. This allows you to pack light, but remember that it might become cooler at night so long pants are recommended. You’ll also want to pack a light jacket in case of scattered showers or if the wind picks up. A hat is another piece of clothing you might want to consider having to keep the sun off your face.

Swim Suits

Beaches are abundant in Hawaii and the water is warm. Pack one swimsuit in your check-in bag and one in your carry-on. This way, if your luggage gets lost, you’ll be covered. Plus, you can swim in one pair while the other pair is drying.

Miscellaneous items that you might want to consider include:

  • Sunscreen
  • Toothpaste
  • Toothbrush
  • Hairbrush
  • Lotion

If you have prescription medications that you’ll need while on the island you’ll want to make sure you have those with you.

Maui Coastline

Refillable Water Bottle

A refillable water bottle that keeps your drinks cold will be indispensable. Fill this up after passing through airport security, that way you won’t have to spend extra money on a bottle of water.

Pack Important Items in Your Carry-On

Always pack cameras, laptops and electronics, and important documents in your carry-on luggage so you can have these with you at all times when traveling through airports. Some items you might consider include:

  • Driver’s license
  • Passport
  • Flight Confirmation Number
  • Cash, Credit Card, and/or Traveler’s Cheques
  • Rental Car Information
  • Hotel Confirmation
  • Prescription medications
  • Health and vehicle insurance cards

Bring the camera you are most comfortable with to capture photo memories. And don’t forget to bring chargers or extra batteries. Power up your phone and laptop the day before traveling, then be sure to pack your chargers that night. It’s easy to forget these on the morning of your flight.

Leave Some Room!

Remember to leave space in your luggage for souvenirs and items you buy while shopping in Hawaii.
