Do’s and Don’ts When Visiting Maui

Do’s and Don’ts When Visiting Maui

Maui has a unique culture that’s welcoming and laid back. If you’re planning a trip to this island paradise, you’ll want to follow the area’s customs and habits to make you feel more like a local and show friendly respect to the residents who are lucky enough to call Maui home.

Visiting Maui

The following are some do’s and don’ts when visiting Maui:

Do say ‘aloha’ and ‘mahalo’

Aloha can mean either hello or goodbye, so if it’s said to you, you should respond in the same way. Mahalo means thank you. When you’re served a delicious meal, someone holds the door open for you, or you’re given a lei, make sure to smile and say, “Mahalo!”

Do take off your shoes when entering a local home

If you’re invited to someone’s home in Maui, take off your shoes before entering. Most residents don’t wear shoes at home and would prefer visitors to leave their shoes just outside the door or in the entryway. Some businesses and condominiums may also post signs asking you to observe this custom. It’s considered a sign of respect to the host.

Do respect the environment

Make sure to help protect Maui’s gorgeous environment by throwing away all trash and by not smoking on the beach. You also shouldn’t try to take home a rock as a souvenir. Instead, leave each place you visit just as you found it. Finally, if you’re lucky enough to come in contact with a sea turtle or other creature, look, but don’t touch.

Don’t leave food out

Since Maui is a warm, tropical climate, you may encounter some creepy-crawly insects and other critters while you’re here. While there’s nothing to be afraid of, don’t leave food out in your room or car, unless you want to risk sharing it with some local creatures!

Don’t drive aggressively

The laid-back pace of Maui means you won’t find drivers laying on their horns unless there’s a true emergency or it’s a friendly tap to say hello to someone they know. Respect the lower speed limits, let drivers in when you can and lay off your horn when you’re on the island.
