Travel To The Grand Canyon By Bus, Car Or Airplane. What's your choice?

Friday, August 20, 2010 by Shanna Stenehjem from Sales & Marketing
A frequent question asked by sightseeing visitors is how to get to the Grand CanyoGrand Canyon South Rim Toursn from Las Vegas. The answer depends on several things. Remember, the Grand Canyon is huge (277 miles long and up to 18 miles wide). Visitors can opt to visit its West, South or North Rims. The West Rim is the one that is closet to Las Vegas at 121 miles away. Although the South Rim is situated only 180 miles from Las Vegas, the highway distance is much greater. It’s actually 280 miles, which takes approximately six hours to drive. Similarly, the North Rim is located 275 miles from Las Vegas.

So what’s the best way for you to get to the Grand Canyon? There are several considerations visitors should keep in mind. Which rim do you want to go to? How much vacation time do you have available? What are the costs involved with getting there? And how willing or able you are to drive long distances.

Below we’ll highlight the most popular ways to get to the Grand Canyon along with some of their benefits and drawbacks.

Which rim?
Here’s a little information to help you decide which Grand Canyon rim to visit:

The West Rim, which is home to the famous Skywalk glass bridge, is nearest to Las Vegas. It is not part of the Grand Canyon National Park but lies on the Hualapai Indian reservation. There are many scenic viewpoints and other activities in the area that include whitewater rafting, wagon rides and cultural demonstrations.

The NorthGrand
Canyon Air Travel Rim is far less crowded than the South Rim. Enhanced by extreme erosion, the views are thought to be better here. Many visitors who travel to the North Rim by car like to make a short detour and explore Zion National Park on the way. Note: The temperatures at the North Rim are 10 to 20 degrees cooler than those at the South Rim, and it is closed during the winter months due to snow.

The South Rim and its visitor services and facilities are open year round. This is the most popular part of the Grand Canyon. The majority of the 5 million tourists who visit each year go here. There’s a free shuttle bus that provides transportation to a variety of overlooks as well as an easy mile-long trail that follows the rim. Plenty of options for accommodations are available in Grand Canyon Village, and visitors will enjoy the area’s historic landmarks, hiking opportunities and ranger-led programs.

Taking a Grand Canyon bus tour
Numerous bus tours are offered from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon South Rim. They are convenient, especially for those who can’t or don’t want to drive. Be aware, however, that on average this type of ground tour takes about 14 hours—during which you’ll only spend two to three hours at your Grand Canyon destination. This is due to the long drive that is required to get there.
Grand Canyon Skywalk Tours
Driving to the Grand Canyon yourself by car
Driving to the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas allows you more flexibility and privacy than other travel options. Plus, you can visit whichever rim you desire. It tends to be most affordable for those who want to bring large families along and is best when you have a couple of vacation days at your disposal. However, you can make the journey from Las Vegas in one day. This requires an early start and enough energy to spend 12 hours or more (if stops are made for bathroom and food breaks) in transit. Depending on how long you stay at the Grand Canyon South Rim to check out viewpoints, hike and take photos at the overlooks, you should arrive back in Las Vegas by late evening.

Going via Grand Canyon plane or helicopter tour
Airplane transportation to the Grand Canyon’s West Rim and South Rim takes 20 and 40 minutes respectively—which is a huge time savings compared to the three- and six-hour drives required by bus or car. Surprisingly, this option is less expensive than you might expect, and it provides unique aerial viewing opportunities as well as increased sightseeing time at the Grand Canyon.

Maverick Airlines provides some wonderful opportunities for experiencing the Grand Canyon without the headache of driving yourself there. If you are interested in the South Rim and would like to enter the Grand Canyon National Park, check out the Grand Canyon Explorer package for $319 (all inclusive). Maybe you’ll want to add on a helicopter tour and enjoy the bird’s-eye perspective of this natural wonder as well? Maverick Airlines’ Canyon Dream package includes air transportation to and from the South Rim, an awe-inspiring 25-minute helicopter tour over the Grand Canyon and plenty of time for sightseeing by foot.
If you’d prefer the see the nearby West Rim, consider the Grand Canyon Western Territory tour. This magnificent package includGrand Canyon Helicopter Tourses a stroll across the Skywalk, so you’ll have a chance to walk on air! It costs only $294 (all inclusive).

Both Maverick Airlines and Maverick Helicopters offer numerous deals to visitors who want to travel to the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas. It’s worth your time to research these different options and pick the mode of transportation that allows you the longest stretch at the Grand Canyon—so you’ll have enough time to create memories that will last a lifetime!

WEST RIM GRAND CANYON

This rim is the one that’s located closest to Las Vegas. It’s only 121 miles away. The West Rim is also known as Grand Canyon West, and it’s part of a Native American reservation that is owned and operated by the Hualapai Tribe. The West Rim is not actually part of the Grand Canyon National Park, as it lies just outside the park’s boundaries. It’s best known for being the home of the Skywalk, a U-shaped glass walkway that juts out over the Grand Canyon—suspending you 4,000 feet above the canyon floor. The weather tends to be warm here and very similar to that of Las Vegas. There are not many overnight facilities for visitors. You can stay in cabin-style accommodations; otherwise you have to drive to the Hualapai Lodge, which is about two hours away. Regarding viewpoints, the main one on the West Rim is called Guano Point. Its name means bat droppings, as it was the site of an old fertilizer mine in the 1930s. The ruins of the mine are still there for you to explore. You might recognize some of the scenery at the West Rim from the big screen because the movies Into the Wild and Next were recently filmed here. Some of the other activities you can enjoy in the area include a one-day whitewater-rafting trip, and a visit to an Old West town at Hualapai Ranch, where cowboys lead horseback tours and give lessons in roping and axe throwing.

Here are some Maverick Helicopters’ tours to the West Rim.

Splendor In The Glass And Helicopter Ride

Saturday, March 13, 2010 by Shanna Stenehjem from Sales & Marketing
Take A Breathtaking Stroll On The Grand Canyon Skywalk And Helicopter Ride

You may not be able to walk on air, but at Grand Canyon West you can walk on glass—while being suspended 4,000 feet in the air! A U-shaped walkway has been constructed at Eagle Point in Arizona. It juts out 70 feet from the canyon’s West Rim, allowing you to go for a stroll with nothing between your feet and the Colorado River except four inches of glass.
The Grand Canyon Helicopter Ride and Skywalk Glass Bridge
Grand Canyon West is owned by the Hualapai Indians, a tribe consisting of more than 1,500 members who have lived on the west side of the canyon for untold generations. They possess nearly one million acres of land there. The Skywalk is a joint venture between the Hualapai Indians and David Jin of Las Vegas. Jin is an entrepreneur and a tour operator specializing in trips to the area. He’d conceived the idea of a glass bridge more than 10 years ago. Once he got the tribe’s support, Jin enlisted Las Vegas-based architect Mark Johnson to design it.

The $30 million Skywalk is an engineering wonder. It has been created to bear at least 71 million pounds, withstand powerful winds of over 100 miles per hour (from eight different directions!) and endure an 8.0-magnitude earthquake within a 50-mile radius. More than one million pounds of steel were used to build it.

Construction on the Skywalk began in March of 2004. In May of 2005, the final test was conducted and the structure passed engineering requirements by 400 percent. History was then made on March 20, 2007, when the official dedication ceremony took place with former astronaut Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin taking the first steps on it, joined by Native American astronaut John Herrington. Since the opening of the Skywalk, Grand Canyon West has welcomed more than 200,000 visitors to the area.

It definitely takes some courage to go on the Skywalk because looking through the glass floor can be intense. After climbing a stairway of about 20 steps, you put a pair of non-scratch booties on over your shoes. You’ll find the glass floor is about five feet wide, and there are six-foot-tall glass walls with handrails all along the Skywalk. Even though your brain kGrand Canyon Skywalknows better, you can’t help but feel nervous as you wander out over the huge gorge. It’s also hard to forget that the only thing between you and a nearly half-mile fall is a few inches of glass! However, the views of the Grand Canyon are spectacular from here and well worth the visit. There’s no better way to experience its beauty.

A maximum of 120 people are allowed on the Skywalk at any given time. You won’t be able to carry anything with you. Visitors are asked to store all their personal belongings in lockers—because if something were dropped, the sensitive plexiglass could be scratched. There is a professional photographer on the Skywalk who will snap your picture, which will be available later for purchase.

Right now, you enter and exit the Skywalk via temporary buildings while the adjacent tri-level visitors’ center is being constructed. Upon completion, it will be 6,000 square feet and contain a museum, movie theater, VIP lounge, gift shop, several restaurants and a bar.

Maverick Helicopter is one of the tour operators that goes to Grand Canyon West from Las Vegas. Their Indian Territory tour features a stop at the Skywalk.  Or you can select a tour from Maverick Airline the Grand Canyon Western Territory.

ELVIS HAS LEFT THE GRAND CANYON

Monday, March 1, 2010 by Leanne Semenza from Wedding & Event Planning
Have you ever imagined that Elvis would show up for your wedding.  Well, here at Maverick anything is possible.

A bride just had to have Elvis serenade them at their wedding at the Valley of Fire.  What a fun and memorable wedding this was for me personally as well as for the pilot, minister and photographer.  The bride wrote her own vows based on a "....Native American Wedding Ceremony to honor this magnificent place. It is one that takes place outdoors, with Father Sky as the roof of this most sacred cathedral, and Mother Earth at your feet to hold you, and the trees and plants to surround you and embrace you..." VOF with Elvis

They chose the Sunset Brilliance package which includes a helicopter flight over the West Rim of the Grand Canyon and landing at the Valley of Fire for the ceremony.

Every wedding has its own personal flavor and the bride spent a lot of time getting every detail just right.  She even arranged for their pilot to catch the bouquet since he is considering taking the next step with his girlfriend.

My thanks to Brendan Paul, www.bestelvis.com and Amanda Miles at www.amandasphotography.com for their excellent contributions.

For information on all our helicopter wedding packages to the Grand Canyon, Valley of Fire or the Las Vegas Strip please visit Maverick Helicopters.

The Valley of Fire is an incredibly beautiful state park as you can tell by these photos.  We have received important information about the status and future of the park and urge you to read our blog regarding this information.

Maverick Helicopters helps deliver supplies to residents of
Navajo Nation during severe snow storm

GRAND CANYON, ARIZONA – The severe snow storms of the past weeks have hit Northern Arizona so hard that travel within the rural areas of the Cameron Chapter of the Navajo Nation have been near impossible.  Because of these incredible circumstances, Maverick Helicopters has delivered much-needed food and supplies to residents not able to maneuver through the snow-packed roads.

The company, which operates flights at Grand Canyon South Rim, flew food, supplies and fire wood to homes around Cameron, Arizona during the week of January 25th.  Managers say approximately 100 people benefited from these important flights.  When the snow pack turns to mud and roads become impossible to maneuver once again, the company expects to help with additional drops as necessary.

“When we were called on, we knew we had to help,” said Brian Brusa, Maverick Helicopters manager.  “This is our community too.  We will continue to help the residents of Cameron, Arizona as long as they need us.”

Maverick Aviation Group, with locations in Nevada and Arizona, is the parent company of Maverick Helicopters, Mustang Helicopters and Maverick Airlines.  This tourism-based company has the largest fleet of ECO-Star helicopters in the world.  The Las Vegas, Nevada location offers helicopter tours of the Las Vegas Strip and to Grand Canyon West.  The Grand Canyon, Arizona location offers tours over the South Rim of the canyon.  The company also operates Beechcraft 1900D fixed-winged aircraft that provide direct flights to both Grand Canyon South Rim and Grand Canyon West from the Henderson Executive Airport. How To Get Around In Las Vegas

Sunday, January 31, 2010 by Shanna Stenehjem from Sales & Marketing
Las Vegas Neon Strip Helicopter Tour ViewOnce you’ve booked your flight to Las Vegas, you still have important transportation decisions to make—mainly figuring out how you will get around the ever-bustling Entertainment Capital of the World. Unfortunately, the city’s public transport system is nowhere near as comprehensive as the one in London. But if you want to avoid hiring a car, you can manage quite well with what’s available. In fact, you’ll find there are many different ways to explore Las Vegas by ground—and by air. So here’s some information to help you plan out your transportation before you arrive.

Going to and from the Airport
Most flights land at McCarran International Airport, which is located near the Strip. It’s one of the busiest airports in the world. McCarran International Airport is comprised of two terminals. Domestic flights arrive at Terminal 1, and international flights—such as those operated by Virgin Atlantic, British Airways and bmi—arrive at Terminal 2. There are several companies that offer transportation to and from the airport. They are located outside the baggage claim area at Terminal 1. Bell Trans, CLS, Gray Line/Coach USA and Showtime all provide shuttles that go to the Strip and Downtown Las Vegas for less than $10. There is also a taxi queue. The fare is $3.30 for the first mile, plus $2.40 for each additional mile and $0.20 for every 24 seconds of waiting. You can have up to five passengers for no additional charge, but there’s a $1.80 fee for every fare originating at the airport. Another option is to rent a limousine. The cost is not as high as you might imagine. The hourly fee for a basic sedan limo starts at $39. And, if you do decide you’d like to hire a care, there’s a free shuttle bus that will take you to the McCarran Rent-a-Car Center, which is home to 12 major car rental companies. It departs every five minutes.

Getting Around by Ground

Aside from walking, you have six options for ground transportation in Las Vegas—bus, trolley, taxi, limousine, monorail and rental car.

Bus
The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada operates several bus systems in Las Vegas. CAT (Citizens Area Transit) covers the greater Las Vegas valley. The gold double-decker Deuce, reminiscent of London’s red buses, operates along the Strip 24 hours a day with stops at most of the city’s major resorts. The ACE Rapid Transit System is being launched in early 2010 to provide quick connections between Downtown Las Vegas, the Las Vegas Convention Center and the Strip. For routes, schedules and fares, call 001-800-228-3911 or visit rtcsouthernnevada.com.

Trolley
The Las Vegas Strip Trolley provides hop-on, hop-off sightseeing travel along the Strip and beyond. It has stops at all the major hotels and goes as far south as the Silverton. There are also routes that will take you to Downtown Las Vegas, the Las Vegas Convention Center and Hard Rock Hotel. Riding in the Las Vegas Strip Trolley’s colourful coach with its brass fixtures, park lighting and wooden benches is a unique experience. For schedules and rates, call 001-877-332-8689 or visit lasvegasstriptrolley.com.

Taxi
You’ll find taxi queues in front of all the major hotels, shopping centres and visitors’ attractions in Las Vegas. You may have a short wait during busy periods, but generally there is always a steady flow of cabs coming and going. Taxi fares are outlined in the “Going to and from the Airport” section above. If you’d like to arrange a cab in advance, here are some companies that are registered with the Nevada Taxicab Authority to contact.
•    Ace (001-702-736-8383)
•    Checker (001-702-873-8012)
•    Desert Cab Company (001-702-386-9102)

•    Western Cab Company (001-702-736-8000)
•    Whittlesea Blue Cab Co. (001-702-384-6111)

Monorail
The Las Vegas Monorail provides a quick, easy and affordable way for visitors to travel along the east side of the Strip in air-conditioned comfort. It’s a state-of-the-art, automated rail system that runs above the city’s streets between the MGM Grand and the Sahara hotel. It has seven centrally located stations, many of which are found at major resorts. There is also a station at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The Las Vegas Monorail runs Mon.-Thur. from 7.00-2.00 and Fri.-Sun. from 7.00-3.00. A single ride ticket is $5 and an all-day pass is $14. Call 001-702-699-8200 or visit lvmonorail.com.

Limousine
Hiring a limousine for a cruise down the Strip or a night on the town will add special memories to your Las Vegas visit. You can select from town cars, sedans, limos, stretch Cadillac Escalades, SUVs, Hummers or—if you are travelling with a big group—limousine buses. Some companies features packages with champagne and roses for the ladies.

Rental Car
Although public transportation is the most economic way around town, you’ll find hiring a car is affordable and can save you time and hassle if you plan to explore the greater Las Vegas area. The following companies are based at the McCarran Rent-a-Car Center:

•    Advantage (001-800-777-9377, advantage.com)

What Lies Outside Las Vegas? Coming From The U.K. Or The U.S. We Have Helpful Tips

What Lies Outside Las Vegas? Let our Maverick Travel Gal Fill You In.

Las Vegas buzzes day and night with excitement and energy. However, there’s more to Southern Nevada than the Las Vegas Neon Strip and Glitter Gulch. Like London and its multicultural outlying districts, you’ll find several historic cities and natural attractions around Las Vegas to explore—all of which have their own distinct atmosphere. Here’s an introduction to a few nearby points on our compass. If you’d like to visit them and don’t want to drive, Maverick Helicopter Tours will gladly arrange a charter flight for you.

Neighbouring Cities
BoulderBoulder City Nevada City
Boulder City is just a few kilometres from Hoover Dam, the historic manmade creation that tamed the raging Colorado River. Boulder City was built in the 1930s to house the dam’s construction workers and their families. Today, it still offers a pleasant, small-town vibe. There are two golf courses and several lovely parks that host annual art festivals. Boulder City’s main street, which is situated along Nevada Highway, is also a wonderful place to stroll. You’ll find many shops offering Native American jewellery, as well as a brewery, diner and wine bar.

Henderson
Henderson is Las Vegas’ next-door neighbour. It’s beginnings date back to Hoover Dam, when an overflow of workers from Boulder City arrived in area. The city was officially founded in 1941 as an industrial town housing employees from the Basic Magnesium plant. Today, Henderson boasts a population of more than 250,000 people, and it’s got an abundance of beautiful parks, trails, golf courses and other recreational facilities. Visitors should explore the Old Town area on Water Street, which has become a thriving arts district. Other attractions include the Veterans wall, the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve and the Galleria at Sunset shopping centre.
Hoover Dam and Lake Mead
Pahrump
Pahrump is one of Southern Nevada’s fastest growing rural cities. It’s located about 95 kilometres from Las Vegas. Most people know it as being the home of the infamous Chicken Ranch brothel, but the area also features casinos, parks, shops and restaurants. The most popular attraction is the Pahrump Valley Winery, which is Nevada’s only winery. Opened in 1990, the facility currently produces nine fine wines. You can take a tour of the grounds, sample wine at the tasting bar and enjoy a gourmet lunch or dinner in Symphony’s Restaurant.

Natural Attractions
Lake Mead
The Lake Mead National Recreational Area is just 40 kilometres southeast of Las Vegas. Known for being North America’s largest manmade lake, it was created by the engineering wonder Hoover Dam. Lake Mead boasts more than 880 kilometres of shoreline, which makes it a perfect destination for outdoor enthusiasts who want to enjoy watery pleasures—like swimming, water skiing, jet skiing, boating and fishing—in the middle of the desert.

Mount Charleston
Mount Charleston is only 56 kilometres from Las Vegas. On average its temperatures are about 10°C lower than in Las Vegas. There are gorgeous ponderosa pines and fir trees wherever the eye can see. The highest elevation at Mount Charleston is 3,615 metres. The area is perfect for skiing in winter and for picnicking and hiking during the rest of the year. You can also enjoy a meal or a steaming cup of hot chocolate in the rustic, lodge-style Mount Charleston Hotel.
Valley of Fire State Park Nevada
Red Rock Canyon
Red Rock Canyon is just 24 kilometres west of Las Vegas. About 65 million years ago a fault thrust limestone and sandstone over each other—producing the scenic rock formations the area is best known for. It’s a popular place for hiking and rock climbing year round. At the visitors centre, you can see a desert tortoise habitat. Red Rock Canyon is also home to wild burros, bighorn sheep and coyotes.

Spring Mountain Ranch

Spring Mountain Ranch State Park is situated at the base of Wilson Cliffs about 48 kilometres west of Las Vegas. The historic New England-style ranch house was a stopover for travellers on the Mormon and Spanish trails. You can explore the old buildings and picnic on the grassy meadow. Spring Mountain Ranch State Park is also the site of outdoor theatre productions and concerts.

Valley of Fire
The Valley of Fire State Park became Nevada’s first state park in 1935. It is only 88 kilometres northwest of Las Vegas. You’ll discover a marvel of scenic landscapes and rock formations comprised of eroded red sandstone there. Hikers can explore hidden canyons, and history buffs will enjoy viewing the petroglyphs. If you are interested in seeing the beautiful red rock formations and the Grand Canyon Maverick has a wonderful combination tour, Dream Catcher Sunset Helicopter tour.

Grand Canyon
Located in western Arizona, the Grand Canyon is one of the world’s seven natural Grand Canyon National Park Tourswonders. It was carved over millions of years by the Colorado River. Interestingly, the Grand Canyon is not just one canyon but a series of canyons surrounding a central gorge that measure 1.6 kilometres deep and 445 kilometres long. There are three rims you can visit. The South Rim is the most popular among tourists, while the North Rim has cooler temperatures and is less accessible due to snow in winter. The West Rim, also called Grand Canyon West, is a destination owned by the Hualapai Tribe. It features the modern-day engineering marvel of the Skywalk glass bridge, which is suspended more than 4,000 feet above the canyon's floor. You may want to plan a Grand Canyon helicopter tour to see the rim and walk the glass bridge.

For our visitors coming from the United Kingdom we hope you find this information useful to plan the perfect Las Vegas vacation. Maverick Helicopters tours wants to provide you with helpful tips to make your experience unforgettable.

A Grand Canyon Helicopter Experience Added To The Bucket List

The Grand Canyon: Put It On Your Bucket List Of Ultimate Adventures For 2010!

The New Year is now in full gear. With a decade recently passed and 2010 just beginning, it’s the perfect time not only for reflection, but also to look forward and make some dream plans.
Grand Canyon and The Colorado River
Do you remember the movie The Bucket List starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman? Two terminally ill men decided to go on the road trip of a lifetime. They made a checklist of everything they’d ever wanted to do in order to live their lives to the fullest before “kicking the bucket.”

If you were to create your own bucket list, what would it include? Many people dream about seeing the “Seven Wonders of the World.” Carved by the raging Colorado River, the Grand Canyon is among them and conveniently situated in Arizona. At a mile deep and up to 10 miles wide, it’s unfathomably enormous. Flying in a helicopter above the Grand Canyon or just standing on one of its rims offers some of the most spectacular views on Earth. The scenery is so exhilarating that you’ll never be able to adequately describe it…and you’ll never forget it. There’s simply no other place in the world that looks quite like the Grand Canyon.

If a visit to the Grand Canyon isn’t on your bucket list, it should be—and Maverick Helicopter Tours can help you check it off. The popular air sightseeing company, which has terminals in Las Vegas and at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, offers a variety of adventures.
Grand Canyon South Rim Wonder
Imagine walking on a glass bridge suspended high above the Grand Canyon’s floor. You’ll have the chance to do this after being flown by helicopter to the West Rim, where you’ll be escorted to dramatic viewpoints and learn about the Hualapai Indian tribe. This is all part of the Indian Territory tour package. Or picture this—after traveling by luxury jet to the South Rim, you’ll board a helicopter for a breathtaking flight above the canyon and then be shuttled to the Grand Canyon National Park, where you can stroll along the Rim Trail at a leisurely pace. This is offered in the Canyon Dream tour package. There are other great tour experiences to choose from as well.

So what are you waiting for? Take the trek to the Grand Canyon with Maverick Helicopters Tours and start 2010 off by doing something that will make you feel giddy and excited and give your life a whole new meaning!

Domestic partnership certificates issued in Nevada

By The Associated Press
10.02.2009 8:38am EDT

(Carson City, Nev.)  Nevada’s secretary of state issued domestic partnership certificate No. 1 at the state Capitol on Thursday as a state law providing many of the same legal rights as marriage to gay and straight partners went into effect.

The first couple to be issued the certificate – Lee Cagley and Larry Davis – shared tears and laughter and were congratulated by Secretary of State Ross Miller.

“This gives us the legal rights to act for each other’s benefit,” said Davis, a funeral home director. “It’s a wonderful privilege and we’re grateful.”

While Nevada’s constitution bans same-sex marriage, the domestic partnership law extends rights similar to those held by married couples – including community property and the right to seek financial support after a breakup – to cohabitating couples.

Nevada’s law permits, but doesn’t require, employers to extend insurance benefits to domestic partners.

The measure was vetoed by Gov. Jim Gibbons, but overridden by lawmakers in May. Couples, both gay and straight, were allowed to pre-register between Aug. 24 and Sept. 24 to receive their certificates on Oct. 1. Registration is ongoing, and about 750 couples had applied as of midday Thursday.

In southern Nevada, Joleen Toves, 28, and Lisa Villagomez, 25, of North Las Vegas said they considered their partnership a positive step in a personal and political struggle. Their legal status as partners will help them through medical emergencies and other issues married couples commonly face, Toves said.

“It’s such a great thing to be able to make decisions for each other and have each other on very important life-changing decisions,” Toves said, as she held a white envelope containing their certificate. “She’s going to be, of course, my next of kin.”

The couple were joined by Toves’ 4-year-old daughter Leilei.

Toves, a bank manager, said they considered getting married in California before an amendment banning gay marriage was passed last year. She said she believes the Nevada law passed in part because it also provides partnership rights for straight couples who choose not to marry.

Nevada joins 16 other states that have laws recognizing domestic arrangements outside of marriage.

State Sen. David Parks, who sponsored the Senate version of the bill, said Thursday was a big day for Nevada...(continued)
