YOUR SAFETY IS MAVERICK'S #1 CONSIDERATION

Monday, July 19, 2010 by Leanne Semenza from Wedding & Event Planning
Maverick Helicopters has one of the best safety records of any tour operator in the world.  Here are some important guidelines and information you should know in order to be safe and insure your helicopter tour will be everything you expect from a top rated company.

Since Maverick Helicopters is located on the McCarran International Airport property all international security measures are enforced and all passengers are required to have and present valid photo identification at check in.

Before departing for the tarmac the pilot will advise you to shut off all electronic devises including cell phones.  You will be advised to stay with your pilot at all times when walking to and from your aircraft.  Please be aware of your surroundings at all times.  You should always be in your pilots line of vision.  Never approach the rear of the helicopter and always walk around the front of the helicopter.

The pilot will give you a briefing before entering the helicopter regarding the safety features of the aircraft.  The pilot will always open and close the aircraft doors for you.  This is of utmost importance and there are no exceptions to this rule unless you are advised by your pilot to do so.

Please take all precautions to secure any personal belongings such as hats, scarves and tissues from blowing away as this could delay the departure while they are retrieved due to a dangerous situation with the rotors.

The pilots will always seat you according to weight and balance.  Improper balance in a helicopter's load can result in serious safety control issues.

All seats are equipped with a headset which allows you to communicate with the pilot and other passengers.  There will be times when the pilot will be talking with the airport tower and will not be able to communicate with you.  He will respond to you as soon as he can.   The headsets also eliminate much of the engine and blade noise.

Maverick Helicopters never hot loads (rotor blades turning) unless in an emergency situation.  The helicopter will always be shut down for loading and unloading with the exception of shuttle transportation to and from sporting events such as NASCAR.  There will always be additional staff to insure the safety of our passengers in this case.

Rest assured that Maverick Helicopters main goal is to offer you a safe, first class experience whatever tour option or package you choose.  Our luxury helicopter charters will whisk you away to your desired location whether it be a city helicopter ride to view possible real estate ventures or a drop off at an Arizona getaway spa.   Or, have you just proposed to the your soul partner and would like an adventurous wedding location that our wedding planner can put together for you without all the stress and frustration that a traditional wedding might bring.

Get Away From Vegas For A Dam Good Time!

Sunday, July 4, 2010 by Shanna Stenehjem from Sales & Marketing
There are some amazing things to see in Southern Nevada if you want to escape the bright lights and ringing slots on the Strip. One of the area’s most popular destinations is Hoover Dam, which is located 30 miles southeast of Las Vegas and seven miles east of Boulder City. Built in the 1930s, it controls the flow of the mighty Colorado River.

Hoover Dam ToursClose to one million people visit the engineering wonder each year. In fact, the Bureau of Reclamation  offers three interesting options for those who want to learn more about the dam. The Power Plant Tours take you inside the dam to see how electricity is generated, while the Hoover Dam Tours include a visit to the power plant and to some rarely seen spots inside the dam. In addition, there’s the Visitor Center admission ticket. This simple pass allows you to check out all the great historical photos and multimedia exhibits that are on display. If you’re not interested in a tour, join the many people who come to walk or drive over the gigantic concrete structure. The views of Lake Mead and the bypass bridge, which is currently under construction, are simply breathtaking.

Maverick Helicopters, which flies by Hoover Dam en route to Grand Canyon West, also showcases many of these views—from high in the air! You won’t find better photographic opportunities or more luxurious transport. The popular company for helicopter tours can even arrange a special charter trip to Hoover Dam via Boulder City.

While in Boulder City, you can stop at the Boulder Dam Hotel, a historical landmark that’s housed presidents and movie stars, for a refreshing drink or delicious afternoon meal. Attached to the hotel is the Boulder City/Hoover Dam Museum, which tells the story of how the dam and city were built though interactive exhibits. Other scenic Boulder City highlights include several charming parks and two golf courses. You should also take a stroll down Main Street and browse through the town’s charming boutiques, Indian souvenir shops and antique stores. Milo’s Cellar, a sidewalk café and wine bar, is the perfect spot for a glass of “vino.”

Maverick Helicopters helps deliver supplies to residents of
Navajo Nation during severe snow storm

GRAND CANYON, ARIZONA – The severe snow storms of the past weeks have hit Northern Arizona so hard that travel within the rural areas of the Cameron Chapter of the Navajo Nation have been near impossible.  Because of these incredible circumstances, Maverick Helicopters has delivered much-needed food and supplies to residents not able to maneuver through the snow-packed roads.

The company, which operates flights at Grand Canyon South Rim, flew food, supplies and fire wood to homes around Cameron, Arizona during the week of January 25th.  Managers say approximately 100 people benefited from these important flights.  When the snow pack turns to mud and roads become impossible to maneuver once again, the company expects to help with additional drops as necessary.

“When we were called on, we knew we had to help,” said Brian Brusa, Maverick Helicopters manager.  “This is our community too.  We will continue to help the residents of Cameron, Arizona as long as they need us.”

Maverick Aviation Group, with locations in Nevada and Arizona, is the parent company of Maverick Helicopters, Mustang Helicopters and Maverick Airlines.  This tourism-based company has the largest fleet of ECO-Star helicopters in the world.  The Las Vegas, Nevada location offers helicopter tours of the Las Vegas Strip and to Grand Canyon West.  The Grand Canyon, Arizona location offers tours over the South Rim of the canyon.  The company also operates Beechcraft 1900D fixed-winged aircraft that provide direct flights to both Grand Canyon South Rim and Grand Canyon West from the Henderson Executive Airport. Custom and private aircraft charters are also available.

How To Get Around In Las Vegas

Sunday, January 31, 2010 by Shanna Stenehjem from Sales & Marketing
Las Vegas Neon Strip Helicopter Tour ViewOnce you’ve booked your flight to Las Vegas, you still have important transportation decisions to make—mainly figuring out how you will get around the ever-bustling Entertainment Capital of the World. Unfortunately, the city’s public transport system is nowhere near as comprehensive as the one in London. But if you want to avoid hiring a car, you can manage quite well with what’s available. In fact, you’ll find there are many different ways to explore Las Vegas by ground—and by air. So here’s some information to help you plan out your transportation before you arrive.

Going to and from the Airport
Most flights land at McCarran International Airport, which is located near the Strip. It’s one of the busiest airports in the world. McCarran International Airport is comprised of two terminals. Domestic flights arrive at Terminal 1, and international flights—such as those operated by Virgin Atlantic, British Airways and bmi—arrive at Terminal 2. There are several companies that offer transportation to and from the airport. They are located outside the baggage claim area at Terminal 1. Bell Trans, CLS, Gray Line/Coach USA and Showtime all provide shuttles that go to the Strip and Downtown Las Vegas for less than $10. There is also a taxi queue. The fare is $3.30 for the first mile, plus $2.40 for each additional mile and $0.20 for every 24 seconds of waiting. You can have up to five passengers for no additional charge, but there’s a $1.80 fee for every fare originating at the airport. Another option is to rent a limousine. The cost is not as high as you might imagine. The hourly fee for a basic sedan limo starts at $39. And, if you do decide you’d like to hire a care, there’s a free shuttle bus that will take you to the McCarran Rent-a-Car Center, which is home to 12 major car rental companies. It departs every five minutes.

Getting Around by Ground

Aside from walking, you have six options for ground transportation in Las Vegas—bus, trolley, taxi, limousine, monorail and rental car.

Bus
The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada operates several bus systems in Las Vegas. CAT (Citizens Area Transit) covers the greater Las Vegas valley. The gold double-decker Deuce, reminiscent of London’s red buses, operates along the Strip 24 hours a day with stops at most of the city’s major resorts. The ACE Rapid Transit System is being launched in early 2010 to provide quick connections between Downtown Las Vegas, the Las Vegas Convention Center and the Strip. For routes, schedules and fares, call 001-800-228-3911 or visit rtcsouthernnevada.com.

Trolley
The Las Vegas Strip Trolley provides hop-on, hop-off sightseeing travel along the Strip and beyond. It has stops at all the major hotels and goes as far south as the Silverton. There are also routes that will take you to Downtown Las Vegas, the Las Vegas Convention Center and Hard Rock Hotel. Riding in the Las Vegas Strip Trolley’s colourful coach with its brass fixtures, park lighting and wooden benches is a unique experience. For schedules and rates, call 001-877-332-8689 or visit lasvegasstriptrolley.com.

Taxi
You’ll find taxi queues in front of all the major hotels, shopping centres and visitors’ attractions in Las Vegas. You may have a short wait during busy periods, but generally there is always a steady flow of cabs coming and going. Taxi fares are outlined in the “Going to and from the Airport” section above. If you’d like to arrange a cab in advance, here are some companies that are registered with the Nevada Taxicab Authority to contact.
•    Ace (001-702-736-8383)
•    Checker (001-702-873-8012)
•    Desert Cab Company (001-702-386-9102)
•    Lucky Cab Company (001-702-477-7555)
•    Star/Yellow Cabs (001-702-873-2000)
•    Western Cab Company (001-702-736-8000)
•    Whittlesea Blue Cab Co. (001-702-384-6111)

Monorail
The Las Vegas Monorail provides a quick, easy and affordable way for visitors to travel along the east side of the Strip in air-conditioned comfort. It’s a state-of-the-art, automated rail system that runs above the city’s streets between the MGM Grand and the Sahara hotel. It has seven centrally located stations, many of which are found at major resorts. There is also a station at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The Las Vegas Monorail runs Mon.-Thur. from 7.00-2.00 and Fri.-Sun. from 7.00-3.00. A single ride ticket is $5 and an all-day pass is $14. Call 001-702-699-8200 or visit lvmonorail.com.

Limousine
Hiring a limousine for a cruise down the Strip or a night on the town will add special memories to your Las Vegas visit. You can select from town cars, sedans, limos, stretch Cadillac Escalades, SUVs, Hummers or—if you are travelling with a big group—limousine buses. Some companies features packages with champagne and roses for the ladies.

Rental Car
Although public transportation is the most economic way around town, you’ll find hiring a car is affordable and can save you time and hassle if you plan to explore the greater Las Vegas area. The following companies are based at the McCarran Rent-a-Car Center:

•    Advantage (001-800-777-9377, advantage.com)

What Lies Outside Las Vegas? Coming From The U.K. Or The U.S. We Have Helpful Tips

Sunday, January 24, 2010 by Shanna Stenehjem from Sales & Marketing
What Lies Outside Las Vegas? Let our Maverick Travel Gal Fill You In.

Las Vegas buzzes day and night with excitement and energy. However, there’s more to Southern Nevada than the Las Vegas Neon Strip and Glitter Gulch. Like London and its multicultural outlying districts, you’ll find several historic cities and natural attractions around Las Vegas to explore—all of which have their own distinct atmosphere. Here’s an introduction to a few nearby points on our compass. If you’d like to visit them and don’t want to drive, Maverick Helicopter Tours will gladly arrange a charter flight for you.

Neighbouring Cities
BoulderBoulder City Nevada City
Boulder City is just a few kilometres from Hoover Dam, the historic manmade creation that tamed the raging Colorado River. Boulder City was built in the 1930s to house the dam’s construction workers and their families. Today, it still offers a pleasant, small-town vibe. There are two golf courses and several lovely parks that host annual art festivals. Boulder City’s main street, which is situated along Nevada Highway, is also a wonderful place to stroll. You’ll find many shops offering Native American jewellery, as well as a brewery, diner and wine bar.

Henderson
Henderson is Las Vegas’ next-door neighbour. It’s beginnings date back to Hoover Dam, when an overflow of workers from Boulder City arrived in area. The city was officially founded in 1941 as an industrial town housing employees from the Basic Magnesium plant. Today, Henderson boasts a population of more than 250,000 people, and it’s got an abundance of beautiful parks, trails, golf courses and other recreational facilities. Visitors should explore the Old Town area on Water Street, which has become a thriving arts district. Other attractions include the Veterans wall, the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve and the Galleria at Sunset shopping centre.
Hoover Dam and Lake Mead
Pahrump
Pahrump is one of Southern Nevada’s fastest growing rural cities. It’s located about 95 kilometres from Las Vegas. Most people know it as being the home of the infamous Chicken Ranch brothel, but the area also features casinos, parks, shops and restaurants. The most popular attraction is the Pahrump Valley Winery, which is Nevada’s only winery. Opened in 1990, the facility currently produces nine fine wines. You can take a tour of the grounds, sample wine at the tasting bar and enjoy a gourmet lunch or dinner in Symphony’s Restaurant.

Natural Attractions
Lake Mead
The Lake Mead National Recreational Area is just 40 kilometres southeast of Las Vegas. Known for being North America’s largest manmade lake, it was created by the engineering wonder Hoover Dam. Lake Mead boasts more than 880 kilometres of shoreline, which makes it a perfect destination for outdoor enthusiasts who want to enjoy watery pleasures—like swimming, water skiing, jet skiing, boating and fishing—in the middle of the desert.

Mount Charleston
Mount Charleston is only 56 kilometres from Las Vegas. On average its temperatures are about 10°C lower than in Las Vegas. There are gorgeous ponderosa pines and fir trees wherever the eye can see. The highest elevation at Mount Charleston is 3,615 metres. The area is perfect for skiing in winter and for picnicking and hiking during the rest of the year. You can also enjoy a meal or a steaming cup of hot chocolate in the rustic, lodge-style Mount Charleston Hotel.
Valley of Fire State Park Nevada
Red Rock Canyon
Red Rock Canyon is just 24 kilometres west of Las Vegas. About 65 million years ago a fault thrust limestone and sandstone over each other—producing the scenic rock formations the area is best known for. It’s a popular place for hiking and rock climbing year round. At the visitors centre, you can see a desert tortoise habitat. Red Rock Canyon is also home to wild burros, bighorn sheep and coyotes.

Spring Mountain Ranch

Spring Mountain Ranch State Park is situated at the base of Wilson Cliffs about 48 kilometres west of Las Vegas. The historic New England-style ranch house was a stopover for travellers on the Mormon and Spanish trails. You can explore the old buildings and picnic on the grassy meadow. Spring Mountain Ranch State Park is also the site of outdoor theatre productions and concerts.

Valley of Fire
The Valley of Fire State Park became Nevada’s first state park in 1935. It is only 88 kilometres northwest of Las Vegas. You’ll discover a marvel of scenic landscapes and rock formations comprised of eroded red sandstone there. Hikers can explore hidden canyons, and history buffs will enjoy viewing the petroglyphs. If you are interested in seeing the beautiful red rock formations and the Grand Canyon Maverick has a wonderful combination tour, Dream Catcher Sunset Helicopter tour.

Grand Canyon
Located in western Arizona, the Grand Canyon is one of the world’s seven natural Grand Canyon National Park Tourswonders. It was carved over millions of years by the Colorado River. Interestingly, the Grand Canyon is not just one canyon but a series of canyons surrounding a central gorge that measure 1.6 kilometres deep and 445 kilometres long. There are three rims you can visit. The South Rim is the most popular among tourists, while the North Rim has cooler temperatures and is less accessible due to snow in winter. The West Rim, also called Grand Canyon West, is a destination owned by the Hualapai Tribe. It features the modern-day engineering marvel of the Skywalk glass bridge, which is suspended more than 4,000 feet above the canyon's floor. You may want to plan a Grand Canyon helicopter tour to see the rim and walk the glass bridge.

For our visitors coming from the United Kingdom we hope you find this information useful to plan the perfect Las Vegas vacation. Maverick Helicopters tours wants to provide you with helpful tips to make your experience unforgettable.

MAVERICK AND ME

Wednesday, November 25, 2009 by Leanne Semenza from Wedding & Event Planning
In September 2004 I was hired by Maverick Helicopter.  I had previously worked in the tour industry seven years prior so I was well aware of Maverick's reputation for being a first class and growth oriented company.

I remember meeting the President and owner for the first time.  He was personally visiting the vendors that were selling Maverick Helicopters which included the Grand Canyon tours, Las Vegas Strip tours, charters and groups.  I was very impressed that he took the time to personally meet and speak with the tour vendors.  While I sold many different tour companies I believe he was the only owner that took the time and effort to introduce himself and talk about his company with me.  To this day, he still makes visits on the strip.

At the time I was hired there were approximately 50 employees and today our company has over 160.

When the opportunity came for a change and with a company that I knew very well had a first class reputation, I jumped at the chance to expand my horizons.  I was hired and quickly moved into the position of Wedding and Sales Coordinator.

At the time I was hired the Maverick fleet consisted of 6 Astar and 7 Ecostar helicopters at the Maverick's original terminal on the strip.  Today, Maverick Helicopters has three terminal locations, the original location at McCarron International Airport on the Las Vegas strip, the south valley location at the Henderson airport and the South Rim of the Grand Canyon.  Besides the three locations we now have a fleet of 35 Ecostar (EC130) helicopters, the largest in the world, and 2 Beecraft 1900 aircrafts.

The President's vision for the tourism industry which includes the Grand Canyon and other famous National Park areas is unprecedented in the helicopter tour industry in Las Vegas.  Today Maverick Helicopters is the largest Grand Canyon tour operator in the world offering the youngest fleet of helicopters.  Five years ago when I joined Maverick we were flying approximately 50,000 passengers annually and today we are flying over 200,000.

The number of flights and helicopter packages offered by Maverick Helicopters includes flights to the Grand Canyon every hour on the hour from sunrise to sunset which includes fly-overs of the Valley of Fire, Hoover Dam and Lake Mead.  Charters can be arranged for any locations in the southwest including all the canyon lands and national parks in Utah, Arizona and California.  If you just need transportation that can be arranged also.

My specialty, of course, is the dramatic and adventureous Grand Canyon helicopter weddings, Valley of Fire weddings and the fun and memorable wedding over the night lights of the Las Vegas Strip.  Beginning the first of the year Maverick Helicopter will be offering a new wedding adventure "Twilight over Vegas" with extended flight time over the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead.   Look for details on our website January 1, 2010.

Please feel free to contact me directly for any information regarding our wedding packages or suggestions you might like to offer.

HELPFUL HINTS FOR YOUR GRAND CANYON OR VALLEY OF FIRE HELICOPTER WEDDING

Wednesday, November 25, 2009 by Leanne Semenza from Wedding & Event Planning
I remember the fear I felt when I first realized I had to plan my wedding.   It would have been so much easier if the option for a destination wedding was in our plans.  I am thinking how easy it would have been to plan an adventure wedding with Maverick Helicopters and choose one of our incredible Grand Canyon or Valley of Fire wedding packages.  Having someone plan and advise us on all the details would have saved myself frustration and a few tears.

Maverick Helicopters takes pride in knowing we can offer the best and most adventurous helicopter wedding packages offered in the Las Vegas area and here is some information you might find helpful.

First of all, why choose Maverick Helicopters for this very important day in your life?  I am Maverick's in-house wedding coordinator and my only job is to make sure our brides and grooms get the service and help they need and expect for the perfect wedding day.  I personally will plan your wedding experience from start to finish, from the first contact to the time the limousine drives you back to your honeymoon destination.

Which destination would you choose, the Grand Canyon helicopter wedding or the Valley of Fire wedding?  By far, the Grand Canyon Sunset helicopter package is the most popular.  Your landing site is 3,500 feet below the rim and you will enjoy the sunset on your return flight and the lights of the strip will be on when you enter the Las Vegas valley.  Personally, my favorite wedding site is the Valley of Fire because of the incredible wedding photos with the brilliant red rock scenery in the background.  It has a very different feeling from the Grand Canyon in that your private helicopter will land on a plateau that overlooks the whole valley.....but it isn't the Grand Canyon.  So, why not enjoy both.  Our top of the line helicopter wedding package is called the Sunset Brilliance and it includes a flight over the Grand Canyon with the landing site at the Valley of Fire.  The Valley of Fire offers only one landing site so their is no other air traffic landing or departing so you will get a much more private feeling at this location.

We also offer a fun and memoriable Vegas Nights Helicopter wedding over the Las Vegas strip for the more time and budget minded wedding party.

Now that you have chosen either the Grand Canyon, Valley of Fire or Las Vegas strip helicopter wedding package here are a few other considerations for you to think about.

What to Wear?  The majority of my brides and grooms do choose the traditional wedding attire,  the white wedding dress and tux.  When planning your bridal wear keep in mind of the temperature at the landing site.  For both the Grand Canyon wedding and Valley of Fire wedding, the temperature will be approximately five degrees different from the Las Vegas temperature.  Five degrees hotter in the summer and five degrees cooler in the winter.  I always advise a jacket or cover up through late fall and early spring.  I would suggest the wedding dress not include a full skirt as it can be cumbersome in the helicopter.  I have experienced wedding parties with everything from the full formal wedding attire to shorts and baseball caps......BE COMFORTABLE.

What shoes to wear?  The ground for the Grand Canyon wedding is very rocky so I would not recommend stilettos.  A more conventonal shoe would be appropriate.  While the Valley of Fire is not as rocky you could be a little more adventurous with your footwear.  Grooms.....you are so lucky.

What hair style?  You will be wearing a headset on your flight.  This is how the pilot and wedding guests communicate.  The headset does fit over your head.  Also, considering  the weather at the Grand Canyon and Valley of Fire is important as it can be breezy and you wouldn't want your hair in your face for your photos.

Of course, I have learned to expect the unexpected and these are just suggestions.  My wedding parties are always unique and set their own style for their special day.

Can the package be customized?  Yes, a few of the requests have been customized bouquets with your favorite color or flowers, your favorite champagne, Elvis, a guitarist and a videographer.

Further articles, information and history of the Grand Canyon and our Valley of Fire  weddings along with our Grand Canyon Tours can be found on Maverick Helicopter blogs.

How Far is the South Rim of Grand Canyon from Arizona's Gateway Cities?

Tuesday, November 17, 2009 by Maverick Expert
If you're visiting one of the cities in western Arizona - be it Flagstaff, Sedona or Phoenix - then you are in the neighborhood of the Grand Canyon.  In fact, many visitors take advantage of the proximity to plan an excursion to Mother Nature's greatest work of art.  You'll find the South Rim is the closest of the Grand Canyon's three rims to all three of these cities.  If you are in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area, the distance is about 231 miles, and your driving time will be just over four hours.  If you are in Sedona, the distance to the South Rim is 119 miles, whcih is likely to take 2 hours of travel time.  Finally, if you're in Flagstaff, the distance is a mere 81 miles - putting you just over an hour away from one of the most breathtaking views of your life!  If you find that you're tired after driving to the South Rim, consider going on a helicopter tour with one of Maverick Helicopters' pilots behind the wheel.  They'll take you on an unforgettable aerial adventure that will allow you to see not only the South Rim, but also the North Rim and some amazing views of the raging Colorado River.

Maverick Helicopters also provides charter helicopter tours from the Sedona area in addition to the South Rim tours.  Grand Canyon tours from Maverick Helicopters can cater to practically any request and would love to make your Grand Canyon tour one to remember!

Maverick Helicopters Charters To Your Every Need!

Tuesday, November 17, 2009 by Maverick Expert
As a major helicopter tour company in Las Vegas, Maverick Helicopters provides services to all types of travelers.  Recently we have experienced an increase of helicopter charter tours that provide private helicopter tours to groups.  We have done large and small groups ranging from one to eight helicopters at a time.  Many companies that frequent Las Vegas for conventions and trade shows enjoy taking a scenic helicopter tour to the Grand Canyon or a quick Las Vegas Night flight down the strip.  With charters and groups, we also provide helicopter service to many area attractions including many National Parks.

The following review is from a recent group tour from Budweiser:

"The Budweiser group really enjoyed the experience with Maverick Helicopters into the Grand Canyon. Many of the guests had never been in a helicopter before so that really added to the trip. Thanks to all of your staff who were all very good to deal with at all times & very pleasant to work with! I hope to return to Las Vegas soon & for the Canyon trips, Maverick will definitely be at the top of my list!!"

Domestic partnership certificates issued in Nevada

By The Associated Press
10.02.2009 8:38am EDT

(Carson City, Nev.)  Nevada’s secretary of state issued domestic partnership certificate No. 1 at the state Capitol on Thursday as a state law providing many of the same legal rights as marriage to gay and straight partners went into effect.

The first couple to be issued the certificate – Lee Cagley and Larry Davis – shared tears and laughter and were congratulated by Secretary of State Ross Miller.

“This gives us the legal rights to act for each other’s benefit,” said Davis, a funeral home director. “It’s a wonderful privilege and we’re grateful.”

While Nevada’s constitution bans same-sex marriage, the domestic partnership law extends rights similar to those held by married couples – including community property and the right to seek financial support after a breakup – to cohabitating couples.

Nevada’s law permits, but doesn’t require, employers to extend insurance benefits to domestic partners.

The measure was vetoed by Gov. Jim Gibbons, but overridden by lawmakers in May. Couples, both gay and straight, were allowed to pre-register between Aug. 24 and Sept. 24 to receive their certificates on Oct. 1. Registration is ongoing, and about 750 couples had applied as of midday Thursday.

In southern Nevada, Joleen Toves, 28, and Lisa Villagomez, 25, of North Las Vegas said they considered their partnership a positive step in a personal and political struggle. Their legal status as partners will help them through medical emergencies and other issues married couples commonly face, Toves said.

“It’s such a great thing to be able to make decisions for each other and have each other on very important life-changing decisions,” Toves said, as she held a white envelope containing their certificate. “She’s going to be, of course, my next of kin.”

The couple were joined by Toves’ 4-year-old daughter Leilei.

Toves, a bank manager, said they considered getting married in California before an amendment banning gay marriage was passed last year. She said she believes the Nevada law passed in part because it also provides partnership rights for straight couples who choose not to marry.

Nevada joins 16 other states that have laws recognizing domestic arrangements outside of marriage.

State Sen. David Parks, who sponsored the Senate version of the bill, said Thursday was a big day for Nevada...(continued)

Oh the Places You'll See... Las Vegas From the Sky!

Thursday, October 22, 2009 by Maverick Expert
Visiting Las Vegas can be a bit overwhelming with all the area attractions and the strip itself can take days alone!  Not to worry though... Maverick Helicopters is here to save the day!  With a Grand Canyon Helicopter tour from our south Las Vegas location, you get to see Lake Mead, Hoover Dam, land in the Grand Canyon AND take a scenic helicopter tour down the strip on your return!  That is 3 attractions within 2-3 hours!

To assist tourists in getting the most out of their time in Las Vegas, we have compiled a list of 5 Las Vegas must-see attractions by helicopter.

#1: Las Vegas strip at night.  All the glitter and lights in Las Vegas is best appreciated from an aerial viewpoint.  Not only do you not have to deal with crowded sidewalks, but you you get the best Las Vegas sightseeing trip available without taking up too much of your trip.  The average Las Vegas strip helicopter tour is 15-20 minutes and costs no more than $100.

#2: Hoover Dam.  This is another busy attraction that is breath-taking from the air.  On the ground, you really can't grasp just how big the dam is.  Seeing it from a helicopter, you are able to see the jaw-dropping cement structure that is Hoover Dam.  You also get a great view of the amazing construction of the bypass being built.

#3: Lake Mead.  The largest man-made lake in the United States is at your fingertips when you visit Sin City.  Taking a Grand Canyon helicopter tour takes you over Lake Mead not once, but twice to get a true feeling of how big it really is.  Covering 110 miles, it would be difficult to take in the whole lake by land but the helicopter tours fly over the lake close enough to see any wildlife sunning themselves by the shore!

#4: Grand Canyon.  The Grand Canyon offers many different activities including South Rim helicopter tours as well as West Rim helicopter tours. The West Rim and South Rim are completely different and should be appreciated for those differences.  The West Rim helicopter tours offered by Maverick lands 3,500 feet below the rim and can only be accessed by helicopter.  For those that are not hikers or just want to sit back and take in the breath-taking view, a Grand Canyon helicopter tour is the right fit!  To see Maverick's Grand Canyon tours, visit us at http://maverickhelicopter.com/tour-listing.aspx.

#5: Valley of Fire.  This is not the first attraction people often think about when visiting Las Vegas but it is a must-see!  Valley of Fire is Nevada's oldest state park and offers views that can't be beat with the red rocks that seem, as the name states, on fire.  Maverick offers private helicopter charters to the Valley of Fire as well as helicopter weddings.  Plus a helicopter ride is only a quick 30 minute flight!

If you are interested in taking a helicopter tour while you are in Las Vegas, please feel free to contact Maverick Helicopters with any questions and we would be happy to assist!

Tuesday, September 29, 2009 by Shanna Stenehjem from Sales & Marketing

Grand Prairie, TX-- Maverick Helicopters, a Nevada-based charter and aerial tour operator and the largest EC130 operator in the world, has surpassed the 100,000 flight hour milestone with their fleet of American Eurocopter EC130s.
“We are an all EC130 operation,” said John Mandernach, Vice President of Maintenance for Maverick Helicopters. “We have 32 aircraft currently in our fleet and will add two additional EC130s by the end of the year.”

The EC130 was initially designed for the tourism industry and its spacious cabin can comfortably accommodate up to seven passengers. The helicopter is equipped with the powerful Turbomeca ARRIEL 2B1 turbine engine which offers a fast cruise speed of 130 knots. It also features the Fenestron® tail rotor that provides an environmentally conscious sound signature. The EC130’s excellent visibility, unmatched cabin comfort, powerful performance, low direct operating costs and maintenance requirements, make it a perfect fit for air tourism as well as corporate and other uses.

“Maverick Helicopters was one of our initial customers for the EC130 and since taking their first delivery in 2003, they have grown into the largest operator of EC130s in the world,” said Marc Paganini, President and CEO of American Eurocopter. “That they have now accumulated more than 100,000 flight hours on their fleet is an amazing testimony to the company and the helicopter itself.”

“We’ve been very satisfied with the EC130,” continued Mandernach. “Passengers love it. It offers the best visibility of any helicopter on the market today. The unmatched visibility coupled with its interior comfort, performance, and low noise signature makes the EC130 the perfect fit for our operation.”
